Can You Get a Better Night’s Sleep with CBD?

Restful Sleep may be an opportunity when you choose to take CBD after speaking with your doctor.

Many people take CBD because they’ve been told that it can help them sleep. Your friends may even swear by it, but is that a good enough reason for you to try it? After all, CBD has not been approved by the FDA as a dietary supplement. As such, manufacturers and sellers of CBD can’t make claims about its medical effectiveness. So, before choosing a CBD product that you hope will relieve an occasional sleepless night or continuing insomnia, consider the following questions:

1. Have the sleep benefits of CBD been proven?

Some people report a restful night after taking a hemp based CBD product. Yet, the few clinical studies available focus primarily on changes to the sleep cycle from another cannabinoid, THC. Sleeplessness is not considered a condition in and of itself but merely a symptom. Problems causing a lack of sleep include pain or other chronic physical condition, PTSD, anxiety, sleep apnea, changes in work schedule or life situation (such as a newborn), and too much screen time or caffeine close to bedtime. Some studies suggest that CBD might be effective against pain or anxiety that’s keeping customers awake, but even this evidence isn’t conclusive.

2. How does CBD enable sleep?

The body’s own endocannabinoid system (ECS) consists of CB1 receptors in the brain and CB2 receptors throughout the body. Various chemicals affect these receptors, including cannabinoids like CBD. If you’re suffering from insomnia as a result of anxiety or chronic pain, a CBD product might be able to inhibit or reduce the intensity of signals in the ECS receptors so you can sleep. Also, a product with cannabinoids might also contain terpenes, or aromatic chemicals that provide a distinctive flavor and character and can enhance the product as part of the “entourage effect” For example, some CBD products contain myrcene, a terpene that’s been known to facilitate drowsiness.

3. What type of CBD product should I take?

Which CBD product (tincture, edible, etc.) and how much to take will depend on why you can’t sleep, whether you have other medical conditions, what time you plan to go to bed, and so on. Some CBD tinctures and capsules are specifically for sleep. Some of these products contain melatonin to help support the body’s natural processes for regulating sleep. Or, if anxiety is what’s keeping you awake, vaping a few puffs of CBD oil might work faster than a product that must be eaten or swallowed.

As with any treatment to fight sleeplessness, seek medical advice before you begin. Speaking with your doctor may help determine whether CBD is an option to try. Assisting with what the starting amount should be, what delivery method to use, and what drug interactions it might have with other medications you’re currently taking. The delivery method determines when it’ is taken. For example, a CBD edible or “PM capsule” might be taken a half-hour before bedtime, while vaping or placing a tincture under the tongue might be done a few minutes before.

Sleep restfully and feel rejuvenated when taking a CBD supplement.

4. Is CBD safe to use?

When used at the right amount and as directed, CBD hasn’t yet been known to cause any serious side effects. However, side effects reported by some consumers include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, irritability and fatigue, often because of high dosage or overuse. In fact, too much CBD might actually interfere with sleep. So, start with a low amount and ramp up slowly until you reach the right dosage. You might not notice an effect right away, but that doesn’t mean you should take too much.

5. What kind of sleep should I expect from CBD?

CBD hasn’t been found effective against serious health conditions that contribute to long-term insomnia. However, it might be able to help you sleep occasionally if you take the right amount. Meaning, following the directions on the label or your doctor’s advice. In some people, CBD may affect the sleep cycle, such as by reducing the amount of REM or dreaming sleep, but it shouldn’t make you feel groggy the next morning.

Thinking about the questions posed above can give you a better idea if CBD is something you’d like to try. The Clear offers a variety of CBD products to think about further.
